“What gets measured gets improved.” – Peter Drucker
Well, I certainly hope so! That’s the whole rationale for me spending top dollar to buy a brand new almost state-of-the-art bathroom scale. In my case, I’m hoping that WHAT gets measured, gets REDUCED!
So what is it that my new Tanita FitScan measures? Well, I can’t exactly be sure because the package and instructions are all written in Japanese. But, if my JLPT cram sessions are paying dividends, I’m pretty sure that, in addition to measuring my body weight 体重, I can also measure my Body Mass Index (BMI)ボディマス指数, Body Fat Percentage (BFP) 体脂肪率, and my Visceral Fat 内臓脂肪.
Too much information you say?
Ignorance is bliss you say?
Well, on one hand I agree. That’s the hand that’s attached to the shoulder where the dude in the little red suit perches himself. You know the dude, the one that so convincingly argues that you deserve that large slice of cheesecake after an even larger dinner and several glasses of wine. You know, because wine is supposed to be good for your right? Darn, that little devil can be convincing.
Well the guy on the other shoulder recently got under my skin and said, “Look dude, you do what you want, eat what you want and drink what you want. But, please for all three of our sakes, can you just get an accurate picture of where you are at weight, BMI and BFP wise?
Well that argument, along with general curiosity, and an all round desire to shed a few pounds so as to make running around the soccer pitch every Sunday hopefully just a tiny bit easier, won the day.
So, I forked out JPY 2,490 (US$20) for my new hi-tech scale, spent three hours buried in the owners manual, and then, with visions of amazingly low numbers dancing in my head, jumped on top of my little FitScan buddy.
Tell him what he’s won Bob, a brand new Dose of Reality!
Yeah, well the numbers weren’t as low as I’d been hoping for. The lil guys on both shoulders were shaking their heads, and I was ready to take the scale back for a refund.
But instead, I decided to air my dirty laundry for all to see. Why? Because…
“Dirty laundry that get’s aired publicly, tends to get cleaned.” – Mark Shriner
Or to put it another way, making your goals public often times helps one keep focused on achieving those goals, and helps to create momentum in the desired direction. Here’s my laundry!
Body Weight 84.2 KG
So, OK, I’ve laid it all out there for you all to see. Hopefully your support, my new FitScan scale, and the fact that I’ve temporarily banished the dude in the red suit, will all help to bring these numbers down.
